It's that time of the year again, thanksgiving and of course the
focus is food. Tons of food will be consumed over the next few days and
we will pay the price for this unfettered feast by way of the added
pounds we'll be forced to carry around afterwards.
If we are wise
though, we can prevent much of this unwanted weight gain by being smart
and eating only those that will bring our bodies maximum nutritional
benefits. Remember what you eat is your decision and no one else so at
the end of the day you have the power to choose.
Here are a few guidelines to help you survive the war of consumption with your waistline intact over the Thanksgiving holiday:
- Make healthy food choices: Choose foods for their nutritional value rather than their taste. Avoid the fatty part of the meat selecting instead the lean protein-packed portions. Limit your consumption of simple carbohydrates such as bread and rice. Make an extra effort to limit heavy sources and excessive use of condiments especially salt.
- Stay away from sweets: I know that this is a hard one because we all are burdened with the insatiable sweet tooth, but you must fight the urge to indulge in all of the sweets and confections that invade thanksgiving. If you must eat something sweet be very stingy because sugar, the main ingredient of all things sweet, wreaks havoc on the body. Heavy consumption can lead to chronic illnesses such as diabetes.
- Drink alcohol moderately: My recommendation is that you do not consume alcohol at all but if you must drink do so in moderation. Alcohol has no nutrition value but it's jammed packed with calories and for most people there is a tendency to eat more if alcohol is consumed.
- Avoid junk food: The name says everything "junk food". Need I say anymore? This stuff if devastatingly bad for you. Avoid it at all cost. I'd much rather you go back at the turkey than to have you fill your body with this poison.
- Exercise: I know exercise is probably the least of your worries during thanksgiving, but you can significantly maintain or improve your health with just a little exercise. Just a few minutes will do, once or twice a day. Try doing a little high intensity interval training, all you need for this is about ten minutes and it will do wonders for your body.
Thanksgiving is a wonderful time of the year, but it is
also a time when we tend to lose control over what we eat. It is a time
when anything goes as far as our diet is concerned and of course, we pay
the price for that in the added weight we gain. Extra precaution should
therefore be taken to ensure that the foods you consume during
thanksgiving promote fat burning and increased metabolism.
